Why Pruning Trees Now Can Save You Some Money

Adopting a practice of pruning the trees on your property will save you money in the long run. Have you heard the phrase that “Maintenance is cheaper than replacement”? It’s true for tree care as well. The health and growth of your trees, can actually depend on regular pruning. Better health, better curb appeal and less risk of property damage by establishing good tree maintenance habits now.

The most common time to prune trees is during a tree’s (usually, winter), and ideally, after the coldest part of the season has passed. This is a general rule as each tree will have its own optimal care guidelines.

So, how can pruning a tree save you money?

Largely, good tree maintenance by a Certified Arborist will continue reinforce a tree’s structure and health, and will act as a preventative measure for property damage.

With proper branch removal and shaping, when storms arise, the wind, water, snow and/or ice will move through the branches without as much risk of losing branches or even the trees themselves. Some storms can actually uproot a tree, if the ground is very wet.

We’ve had a very cold winter, and it’s lately been wet as well. The branches that come down, and the trees that topple over can do serious damage to homes, fences and even neighboring properties.

Keeping your trees strong and healthy will keep them standing.

Let’s look at some numbers:

Meet the hypothetical tree: Say you have a beautiful, mature tree in your backyard. It stands approximately 80 feet tall and has branches ½ way up that appear to be 12-15 inches in diameter near the trunk, and then grow out from the trunk by 15-20 feet. Each.

This tree is planted about 4 feet from a fence shared with a neighboring property. And the trunk stands about 6 feet away from a detached garage. Branches from the tree grow out and give shade to the neighbors on the other side of the fence, and also throw shade over the garage.

This mature and beloved tree hasn’t had any pruning or maintenance done in more than 8 years.

The Preventive Maintenance Care

An estimate shares that a $1200 – $1500 pruning service will thin 3-5 large branches from the top and allow for better airflow and circulation. Helpful in the storms.

The estimate also details specific branches that should be monitored for cracks or breaking over the next year.

The Repairs Needed After a Storm

There was a very windy and rainy storm late in December.

One large branch broke from our hypothetical tree. But this broken limb is actually still attached to the tree’s trunk. Unfortunately, the branch was one that grew over the garage and there is now damage to the roof of the garage that needs to be repaired.

Inside the garage? No…no cars fit in this one.

It’s full of skis, a couple of kayaks, 2 paddleboards and 5 bicycles. All of which will need to be reviewed for damages. The woodworking tools and supplies, used by this creative owners, are now also open to risk of theft while the garage is damaged.

Let’s also remember that the branch needs to be removed not only from the tree but also from the property.

Easily, this storm’s damage is well over the $1500 preventive maintenance care.

The work we do, with chainsaws, trucks and chippers, is definitely for larger trees. Keep in mind that maintenance tasks can be rotated between the mature trees on your property too.

Depending on the trees’ needs and health, and on your budget, an evergreen may be pruned one year, and then a year later (or even two years later) a deciduous tree (one that loses its leaves annually) may need our care and attention.

Ask your chosen Certified Arborist to put together a long-term care plan for the trees on your property as part of an estimate.

There is a way that good tree maintenance can actually make you some money too.

Are you ready for this one?

Let’s talk a bit about keeping a tree’s beautiful shape throughout its life on a residential property.
Your trees, mainly in the front yard, can add or detract from your property’s overall curb appeal.

What does this mean?

A beautiful home, and the surrounding environment on the property, can bring a better price, or ROI, when you go to sell your property to a new owner.

Think about it from a “buyer’s” perspective. Would you want to make a long-term, large invest in a well-kept, healthy property? One that’s been thoughtfully kept and professionally maintained.

Or would you invest in a property with misshapen, possibly dead or diseased trees surrounding a house?

Which would you choose to invest in?

Long term care makes for a better return on your investment. Especially when you begin to consider selling your property.
